“Teach us to Pray” Pt 3

“Teach us to Pray” Pt 3

PRAYER IS A LEARNED SKILL… FUNDAMENTALS ARE REQUIRED…

NAS Luke 11:1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”

1. THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING THAT EFFECTIVE PRAYER IS HEARTFELT AND DONE IN THE SPIRIT

2. GOD IS OUR FATHER AND HE RESPONDS TO BOLDNESS AND DRAWING OUR STRENGTH FROM HIM AND A LAST DAY’S MINDSET.

PRAYER ALLOWS US A WINDOW INTO GOD’S HEART.

THE PRAYER CLOSET IS A BIRTHING CENTER FOR PURPOSE…

C SPURGEON: “PRAYER IS THE AUTOGRAPH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT UPON THE RENEWED HEART”

BRO HAGIN: “MOST FAILURE IN LIFE IS FROM PRAYER FAILURE”

THE CHURCH OF JESUS WAS BORN IN A PRAYER MEETING…

Acts 1:14 – “these all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of jesus and with his brethren.”

IF YOU DON’T EVER GET IN THE SPIRIT YOU DON’T RECEIVE ANYTHING AND IF YOU DON’T RECEIVE ANYTHING YOU DON’T CARRY ANYTHING AND IF YOU DON’T CARRY ANYTHING YOU CAN’T GIVE OUT ANYTHING.

(ACTS 2:42 – DEVOTED TO PRAYER)

JESUS EMPHASIZED HIS HOUSE AS A HOUSE OF PRAYER
Isa. 56:7 “Even then will i bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.”

LUKE 19:46, “Saying unto them, it is written, my house is the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

I Cor 3:16, “Know ye not that you are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you?

Heb 3:6 – “But Christ as a son over his own house, whose house we are…if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”

I Cor. 6:19- “What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God and ye are not your own.”

I Pet 2:5, “Ye also as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to god by Jesus Christ.”

A PORTION OF THE SPIRITUAL SACRIFICES THAT PETER IS TALKING ABOUT IS PRAYER.

Rev. 5:8 When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Acts 10:4 “Cornelius!” And fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

JOHN WESLEY – “It seems God is limited by our prayer life, that he can do nothing for humanity unless someone asks him.”

PRAYER IS A LEARNED SKILL… JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SKILL.

NAS Luke 11:1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”

WITHOUT PRAYER THERE IS NO INTIMACY WITH THE FATHER.

WE SAID LAST WEEK, “EFFECTIVE PRAYER IS HEARTFELT AND DONE IN THE SPIRIT”.

JESUS ILLUSTRATED THE FATHER IN 2 PARABLES

Luke 11:5 Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you;

Luke 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4 For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”

JESUS WAS CONTRASTING THE FACT THAT: GOD IS NOT A LAZY, SELFISH NEIGHBOR, & HE’S NOT AN UNPRINCIPLED JUDGE.

WE ARE PRAYING TO A CARING GOD WHOSE ATTITUDE IS TOTALLY OPPOSITE OF THE UNJUST JUDGE.

NLT Heb 4:16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

MESS So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help

THE THRONE IS THE BELIEVERS PLACE OF AUTHORITY.

THE THRONE IS THE BELIEVERS PLACE OF GRACE, BLESSING, MERCY, HELP, ANSWER…

WE DRAW OUR STRENGTH FROM HIM… Is 40:31

Ps 59:9 Because of his strength I will watch for You, For God is my stronghold.10 My God in His lovingkindness will meet me.

16 But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, For You have been my stronghold 17 And a refuge in the day of my distress. O my strength, I will sing praises to You; For God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.

LAST DAY’S MINDSET…

NAS 1 Pet 4:7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

Mess Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer.

NLT Be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.
