God’s Extravagant Love Pt 3
1 John 4:16 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
GODS LOVE CAN BE MEASURED BY LOOKING AT SOME STANDARDS
1. BY LOOKING AT THE PRICE THAT WAS PAID
THE PRICE THAT HE PAID WAS HIS OWN BLOOD.
HE GAVE IT UP IN A 7 FOLD SHEEDING OF HIS BLOOD.
Leviticus 16:14 Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
Lev 26:18 If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
21 I will increase the plague on you seven times according to your sins.
24 I, will strike you seven times for your sins.
28 I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins.
2. HIS LOVE CAN BE MEASURED BY THE INHERITANCE THAT HE GIVES US IN CHRIST.
HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO GOD’S EXTRAVAGANT LOVE?
1 John 3:16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
BEING A CHRISTIAN IS BEING LIKE CHRIST!
LOVE IS OUR GREATEST WITNESS AND IF WE LIMIT THIS WE LIMIT OUR WITNESS.
WE SHOULD BE EXTRAVAGANT ALSO!
Mark 14:3 While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. 4 But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5 For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. 6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. 9 Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”
John 12:3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?” 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.
3 FACTORS IN THE STORY.
1 WHAT MARY DID,
2 WHAT JESUS DID,
3 HOW THE CRITICS REACTED
MARY WAS EXTRAVAGANT. AND TOTALLY DEVOTED.
NOTICE WHAT JESUS SAID.
Mark 14:6 She had done a good deed to me… (Amp – a good and beautiful thing to me)
Msg Something wonderfully significant
Wnt She has done a most gracious act towards me
Mark 14:8 She has done what she could
GOD NEVER ASKS US TO DO MORE THAN WE CAN.
Mark 14:8 she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.
SHE WAS OPEN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THE HOLY SPIRIT COULD SPEAK TO HER HEART BECAUSE SHE WAS WILLING TO BE EXTRAVAGANT
Mark 14:9 wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.
3 THINGS ABOUT THE CRITICS.
1. THEY WERE STINGY.
2. THEY WERE HYPOCRITES.
3. THEY WERE MISERABLE. THEY COULDN’T EVEN ENJOY THE FRAGRANCE THAT FILLED THE ROOM.
